According to the U.S. Trust’s annual survey of high-net worth and ultra-high-net-worth Americans, the 2015 U.S. Trust Insights on Wealth and Worth;

“Health is the number one element of a life well lived.  The wealthy almost unanimously agree (98%) that the most valuable asset they have is their health, and investing in health is as important as investing in wealth. The wealthy invest in their mental, physical and emotional health and are willing to seek the best care, coaches and counselors to assist them.”

We at Living Well Family Office echo the findings of the survey and highlight the particular interest of clients in preventative and holistic wellness.  Our goal is to see our families flourish though an intentional process centered around homeostasis, which is the property of a system in which variables are regulated so that internal conditions remain stable and relatively constant.

It seems that among the affluent, there is a bit of a food revolution happening right now that is going beyond the typical organic discussion. According to the U.S. Trust study, “While 91% of wealthy people are willing to spend more than they currently do to maintain good health, fully one in three of the Mature generation (70+) say there is “no limit” to what they would spend to maintain their desired health status.” Millennials especially are asking questions about the source of their food and the impact it may have. It is not uncommon to see restaurants openly displaying signs that their food is Organic, Gluten Free, Grass Fed, Non-GMO, and Committed to Fair Trade. It is very difficult, if not impossible, to improve upon the natural order. Turning back the clock and returning to ancient ways of food preparation seem to be the most beneficial to the human body. Wholesome food takes time to prepare but there are invaluable nutritional benefits in consuming homemade bone broths, ancient super foods, healthy fats, and soaked grains and nuts. There is no compromise in flavor by going this route either, as I can tell you from experience that properly prepared wild caught fish or grass fed lamb or steak is as savory as it gets. Sourcing foods from local biodynamic organic farms is also on the rise.

Many people are not aware that children with ADD, ADHD, and Autism spectrum issues can have their symptoms reduced significantly with a tailored nutrition plan. Furthermore, I am convinced that athletes and executives can perform at a higher level when nourished properly. Going beyond trendy crash diets, and instead setting up a lifestyle of energy, health, and sustainable weight is well within reach. A Family Wellness Advisor can be utilized to educate the household chef on how to create tasty meals without sacrificing nutritional and healing properties of wholesome food. If a chef is not on the household staff, the Family Wellness Advisor can coordinate the daily delivery of such meals from boutique companies that provide them in certain locations. This can be exceptionally helpful for families with children struggling with ADD, ADHD, and Autism spectrum disorders, as breakfast and lunch meals can be delivered daily to set the children up for success at school that day.

Homeostasis is when the different systems of the body are monitored and regulated so that internal conditions remain stable and relatively constant. Family Wellness Advisors are critical to architecting and overseeing preventative and holistic wellness for each family member. A tailored wellness plan is the goal for every family member. Practically speaking, the first step involves a thorough consultation with a naturopathic or concierge doctor to collect specimens and understand which systems might be deficient. After the results have been analyzed, the Family Wellness Advisor works with the naturopathic or concierge doctor to craft a specific wellness plan for each individual member of the family. Furthermore, the best Family Wellness Advisors will walk the journey with you to wellness, as most people already have an idea of where they want to go, they just need the coaching to get there. According to the U.S. Trust study, “Millennials, business owners and those with the greatest wealth were most likely to have sought concierge health care… Younger respondents are more likely to invest in proactive, preventive measures to maintain good health whereas older respondents are more likely to be focused on medical and restorative health measures. The Millennial generation is driving interest in fresh, organic foods and nutrition, and there is significant interest among those 50 or younger in holistic or alternative medicine.”

If a family patriarch or matriarch neglects their health, it is possible they might forego the opportunity to imprint meaningful values on their children and grandchildren. It is all too common for one to neglect their health in the early years to create their wealth, only to turn around again in later years to spend their wealth to try to buy-back their health. If heart disease or diabetes take them out of the game early, the children and grandchildren suffer the most, and will likely be unprepared for the responsibility of great wealth.

At Living Well Family Office, we want to see your entire family thrive and achieve homeostasis.  Our wellness advisors create a customized health book for the family, which also includes detailed specifics on grocery and meal planning with your private chef.  Most importantly, our wellness advisors will walk the journey with you to wellness, as most people already have an idea of where they want to go, they just need the coaching to get there.
